Loads of Information...

Hello everyone! Today is Friday–TGIF and my Grandma's birthday, so this is your gift, Grandma-a blog post from me because we all know how much you love reading my blog! Also, its the 6th days of spring and it doesn't feel like it! Thankfully, I'm lucky for living here in western SD because we aren't quite experiencing the 'nice' spring weather like my folks are. I'm being sarcastic when I say that, they had roughly 8-9 inches of snow earlier this week. Anyways, today is meant to be a catch up from my last post. So here we go...

I've mentioned that we have a new addition to our household, our little, stinkin' cute yet naughty puppy Jet. Honestly, Dustin and I do feel like we are in parenthood. Scary thing to say, but when we have kids, I bet they are just going to be like Jet besides furry and always chewing on things. Jet is an attention hog and sometimes we feel like we don't cater to his needs all the time. But to update you on his progress, here are some photos...

"Hi! Let me formally introduce myself. I'm Jet!"

"I like to run like a wild man!"

"And, I like to chew on things...especially my favorite bone!"

With having Jet, I've slowly found time to do some cooking and baking. I would like to share two wonderful and easy recipes during this busy time of the year.

First recipe I found while looking through an array of cookbooks. While back, Dustin about these small ones, especially this one titled-101 Things to Do With A Slow Cooker. Now, I love my slow cooker because it feels like a magic genie made supper for us while we were at work.
Recipe: Pork Chops and Mushrooms
Ingredients:
4 boneless pork chops (I used bone-in)
2 medium onions
1 can (4 oz.) sliced mushrooms
1 envelope dry onion soup mix
1/2 cup water
1 can (10.75 oz.) cream of mushroom soup

Directions:
Place meat in greased 3.5-4.5 qt slow cooker. Top with onions and mushrooms. In a seperate bowl, combine soup mix, water and soup. Pour over mushrooms and pork chops. Cover and cook on low heat 6-8 hours. Can serve with rice but our meat feel off the bone! It was delicious!

Second recipe I needed to make while I watched three little bananas turn more ripe everyday, for the past several weeks! I just didn't want to throw them away so what do you do with nicely ripped bananas, that's right, make banana bread. My co-worker was going through the same feeling that I made her some too with her well ripped bananas!
Recipe: The Best Banana Bread Ever!
Ingredients:
¾ cups
Butter Or Margarine, Softened

1-½ cup
Sugar

1-½ cup
Bananas, Mashed

2 whole
Eggs

1 teaspoon
Vanilla Extract

½ cups
Buttermilk

2 cups
Flour

1 teaspoon
Baking Soda

1 teaspoon
Salt

1 cup
Walnuts, Chopped (optional)

Directions:
1. If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute with 1 teaspoon cider vinegar in a half cup measure, then add enough milk to equal a half cup and let stand 30 minutes. (I acutally did this!)
2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar; then add bananas, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk.
3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
4. Add flour mixture to banana mixture and mix well. Fold in nuts, if using.
5. Pour into two, greased and floured loaf pans (or one 10” loaf pan and if you do this, add about 20 minutes to the baking time).
6. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes or until cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

But I hope I did my duty in fulfilling you on what's been happening once again. I don't mean to cut this short but Jet needs to be catered to again. What a needy dog he is! I'll be back soon with some more updates!

Local Goodness...

Many people are desiring more local items than those wholesale products you find in your grocery store these days. Local Farmer's Markets are booming around the United States for consumers to gather those fresh goods to eat or use. Frankly, I love home grown stuff. This past summer I attempted to keep my first garden alive. Even though I felt it was successful, we all know how it ended!

So to get to the point of my post, I needed an idea for an article for our weekly ag publication so our editor and I compiled a list of western decor. At first, I thought this was going to be a large task trying to find someone around our region who creates something fun, interesting, and/or useful decor items. Surprisingly, it wasn't as difficult as I thought.

In my search, I came across this website www.sdlocalfood.org. It's a website directory dedicated to connecting families with South Dakota farms and food producers who are growing fresh, healthy, locally-grown vegetables, eggs, meats, grains, and other items. I can't believe the array of items that these people create so a consumer, like myself, could enjoy the luxury of locally made items.

This is where I found one western decor item, only because it reminded me a lot of home. I found these grainsack pillows. This lady from eastern SD creates these beautiful feather-down pillows.

The reason why these remind me of home is because my grandfather, Marlow has been in the seed business for many and many years. I really don't know how many years its been. But I remember the time that I would help him fill the seed bags up, while he sews and neatly packs them on a pallet. Even though I usually worked with heavy-duty paper bags, I still got to see some pretty cool graphics on the older bags. Now grainsacks have definitely changed over time!

But I thought I would share this interesting find. Also, for my Minnesota family and friends, there is a Minnesota Grown Directory–which identical to the SD Local Coop. I find its best to support these people who provide their goods to local consumers. If I was one, I would truly appreciate the support!

Meet Jet...

Hello everyone! Dustin and I have an announcement to make! We would like to tell you that we have a new addition to our household! Meet Jet, our lovable Basset Hound!

He's 7.5 weeks old. His ears touch the floor. He a sniffing and chewing monster. But he loves to cuddle!

Thanks to your neighbor who donated a chew bone, which he loves now!

We have had many discussions about getting a dog and narrowing down to what breed. Dustin wanted to get a bulldog and I wanted to get a Corgi. But some how, we both fell in love with a Basset Hound. It was probably because I go on Pioneer Women's website daily to see if she has any updates about Charlie, her Basset Hound, and obviously had to share them with Dustin!

As new puppy parents, I think Dustin and I have done very well. The first couple nights he cried in his kennel but last night, I think he slept through the whole night. The only reason that I can think of why he did that is Dustin took him for a walk up and down a rather large hill. Dustin said half way through he stopped and sat down at the bottom of the hill, telling him he's not walking up that again!
Nap time!

For every new puppy owners, potty training is a nightmare. However, I think we got a system down and Jet is adapting very well and making fewer accidents each day!

I know many family and friends wanted to see photos. I tried my best to upload photos as soon as possible but guess what, Jet is a little camera shy. Every time I take a photo, he either turns his head or runs away! We'll work on that one!

But that's all I have for now. This weekend we are going to take Jet for a long car ride to Rapid City. We need to get him a few essentials like a collar, leash, a small kennel for when he goes to MN or to Bristol, and chew toys of course! I'll be sure to update more about Jet as we cross some major barricades!
